Equipment list for hill walking courses
You will need to bring:
These should be hill walking boots with a supportive ankle, good tread pattern and able to secure your foot to prevent blistering.
These should be “loop stitch” style walking socks.
- Walking trousers
Trousers which allow a good range of movement (not jeans).
- Waterproof trousers
These should be waterproof (not just showerproof) and with a side zip to allow them to fit over boots.
- Base layer t-shirt
This should be able to wick sweat and dry quickly (preferably not cotton).
- Upper body insulation
Clothing which allows a good range of movement and at least one additional warm layer, e.g. 2 fleeces.
- Waterproof jacket
This should be waterproof (not just showerproof) and with a hood which can be cinched around the face.
- Warm hat and gloves
- Cap, sunglasses and sun cream
For if the weather does get sunny!
- Food and drink
Enough to keep you energised for the whole session (Keep in mind that you will be extremely active and will burn through a lot of energy).
- Any personal items
e.g. medication, camera, insect repellent etc.
This should be big enough to carry all of your equipment (Approx. 30 litres for day sessions) and everything should be in waterproof plastic bags or ‘dry bags’.
To be carried in case of night navigation (a very unlikely scenario).

- Compass and maps
(A selection of 1:25000 and 1:50000 OS maps and 1:40000 BMC maps).
